Panic Attack
Sudden intense fear with physical symptoms peaking in minutes
Step by Step
Signs: racing heart, chest tightness, breathlessness, trembling, sweating, tingling, feeling detached, and fear of dying or losing control, usually peaking within minutes. Stay with the person, speak calmly, and reassure them that the feeling will pass. Encourage slow breathing and grounding, for example naming things they can see, hear, and feel. Do not dismiss their feelings or crowd them. Because the symptoms can resemble a heart attack, call emergency services if there is chest pain, if they have not had a panic attack before, or if you are unsure. People with frequent panic attacks can get support from health professionals.
