Suicide Crisis Response
Immediate support for suicidal thoughts or attempts
Step by Step
If someone's life is in immediate danger, or they have harmed themselves, call emergency services. Ask directly and calmly whether they are thinking about suicide; asking does not plant the idea. Listen without judgment and do not argue, lecture, or promise to keep it secret. If it is safe to do so, help remove access to means of harm, such as medicines or weapons. Do not leave someone alone if they are at immediate risk. Help them contact a crisis line or professional support, for example 988 in the US, Samaritans on 116 123 in the UK and Ireland, or Lifeline on 13 11 14 in Australia, or local services elsewhere. Stay with them until help is in place, and look after your own wellbeing too.
