Fracture Management
Immobilize suspected broken bones to prevent further injury
Step by Step
Call emergency services for suspected fractures of the thigh, pelvis, neck, or back, open fractures, or if the person is in severe pain. Do not move the person if a head, neck, or back injury is suspected. Support the injured limb in the position found, using padding or by gently securing it to the body or an uninjured limb if help is delayed. A cold pack wrapped in cloth can reduce swelling. Check circulation, sensation, and movement beyond the injury. Cover open fractures with bone through the skin with a clean dressing without pressing on the bone. Do not attempt to straighten a deformed limb. Give nothing to eat or drink in case surgery is needed.
