Vomiting and Diarrhea
Fluid first aid for gastroenteritis in adults
Step by Step
The main risk of a stomach bug is dehydration. Sip fluids constantly, small amounts often, and use oral rehydration solution if the illness is severe or lasting, since it replaces salts as well as water. Rest and return to plain foods as tolerated. Anti vomiting and antidiarrheal medicines help some adults but should be avoided with fever or blood in the stool. Wash hands thoroughly and often with soap, since most cases spread person to person, and stay off work and away from vulnerable people and food handling for 48 hours after symptoms stop. Seek medical advice for blood in the stool, severe pain, fever above 39 Celsius, no improvement after 48 hours, little or no urine, dizziness on standing, or confusion. Call emergency services if the person cannot keep any fluids down and becomes drowsy.
