Nosebleed Epistaxis

Basic CareGeneral
In an emergency, call your local emergency number first. This guide is general information, not a substitute for first aid training or professional medical advice. Follow the instructions of the emergency call handler.

Controlling anterior nosebleeds, the most common type

Step by Step

Sit the person down and have them lean forward, never back, which can send blood down the throat. Pinch the soft part of the nose, just above the nostrils, firmly for 10 to 15 minutes without releasing, while breathing through the mouth. A cold pack wrapped in a cloth on the bridge of the nose may help. Seek urgent medical help, or call emergency services, if bleeding lasts longer than 10 to 15 minutes, seems excessive, makes the person vomit, followed a blow to the head, or if they take blood thinners, feel weak, or have difficulty breathing. Avoid blowing the nose or heavy lifting for a day or so afterwards.
