Stroke Recognition FAST
Rapid identification of stroke symptoms to enable time critical treatment
Step by Step
Use FAST: Face drooping on one side, Arm weakness or numbness, Speech difficulty or slurring, Time to call emergency services immediately. Note the time symptoms started, since clot busting and clot removal treatments are time critical. Other signs include sudden vision loss, sudden severe headache, confusion, dizziness, and loss of balance. Do not give food, drink, or medication, including aspirin, before hospital assessment, since not all strokes are caused by clots and swallowing may be affected. Keep the person comfortable and reassured. If they become unresponsive but are breathing, place them in the recovery position.
