Rescue Breathing
Giving breaths to someone who is not breathing but still has a pulse
Step by Step
Some emergencies leave a person not breathing with a pulse still present, for example after drowning, drug overdose, or in children. Give 1 breath every 5 to 6 seconds for adults, about 10 to 12 per minute, and 1 every 3 seconds for children and infants. Each breath should take about a second and make the chest gently rise. Use a CPR face shield if available. Check every 2 minutes that a pulse is still present, and start full CPR with compressions if it is not. Keep going until help arrives, the person starts breathing, or you are too exhausted to continue. Emergency call handlers will talk you through the rhythm.
