Automated External Defibrillator
Portable device that analyzes heart rhythm and delivers a shock to restore normal rhythm in cardiac arrest
Step by Step
Call emergency services and continue CPR while someone fetches the AED. Turn on the AED and follow its voice prompts. Attach pads to the bare chest, one below the right collarbone and one on the left side below the armpit, as shown on the pads. Make sure nobody touches the person while the device analyzes and shocks. Resume CPR immediately after each shock or if no shock is advised. AEDs are designed for untrained members of the public and will not deliver a shock unless the heart rhythm needs one. Defibrillation within the first few minutes of collapse greatly improves the chance of survival.
