Mushroom Poisoning
Emergency response to suspected poisonous mushroom ingestion
Step by Step
Anyone who eats a wild mushroom and feels unwell needs urgent assessment, even if symptoms seem mild, since the most deadly species delay serious symptoms for 6 to 24 hours while the liver is destroyed. Call emergency services or a poison control center at once, and do not wait for symptoms. Keep a sample or photograph of the mushroom, including the base, and any leftovers or cooking water. Do not make the person vomit. Bring the container if available. Death cap and destroying angel mushrooms look edible and taste pleasant, which is why identification by app or folklore kills people every year. Treatment may involve activated charcoal, fluids, and liver supportive care, and early transport to hospital improves outcomes. Never eat wild mushrooms without expert identification.
