Internal Bleeding Signs
Hidden hemorrhage indicators after injury or illness
Step by Step
Suspect internal bleeding after major trauma such as falls or crashes, or with some medical conditions such as stomach ulcers or ectopic pregnancy. Signs can include abdominal pain or swelling, bruising on the abdomen or sides, vomiting blood, blood in the stool or black tarry stools, dizziness, weakness, rapid pulse, pale clammy skin, confusion, and thirst. Shock without visible bleeding should be treated as possible internal bleeding. Call emergency services: internal bleeding cannot be treated outside hospital. Help the person lie down, keep them warm, give nothing to eat or drink, and monitor breathing until help arrives.
