Impaled Object
Penetrating objects must stay in place until surgical removal
Step by Step
Call emergency services. Do NOT remove an impaled object: it may be plugging damaged blood vessels, and removal can cause severe bleeding. Support the object in place with bulky padding built up around it, without pressing on it or pushing it deeper. Control bleeding by pressing around, not on, the object. Keep the person still, warm, and reassured, and give nothing to eat or drink. Do not try to cut or shorten the object; leave this to emergency services. This applies to knives, glass, metal, and other penetrating objects.
