Eye Injury
Protecting vision after eye trauma
Step by Step
For chemicals in the eye: rinse immediately with clean running water for at least 20 minutes, holding the eyelids open, with the injured eye lower so water runs away from the other eye, and seek emergency care. For a loose particle: blinking or rinsing with clean water may flush it out; do not rub the eye. Do not try to remove anything stuck in or embedded in the eye; cover it lightly with a clean pad or shield without pressure and seek emergency care. For a blow to the eye, a cold compress held gently can reduce swelling. Cuts or penetrating injuries need an emergency call. Seek urgent care for any change in vision, severe pain, or bleeding inside the eye.
