Finger Tip Injury

Emergency ResponseTrauma
In an emergency, call your local emergency number first. This guide is general information, not a substitute for first aid training or professional medical advice. Follow the instructions of the emergency call handler.

Common digit injuries from doors and cuts

Step by Step

Control bleeding with firm pressure on a clean dressing and raise the hand. Small, clean, shallow cuts can be cleaned and covered. Seek medical care for deep cuts, cuts that gape or keep bleeding, injuries affecting the nail bed or nail, crush injuries with severe pain or deformity, or loss of feeling or movement, as tendons, nerves, and bones can be damaged. If part of the fingertip has been cut off, keep the piece as for an amputation and take it to the emergency department. A health professional will check tetanus protection. Watch for signs of infection over the following days.
