Electric Shock
Electrical injury risks both victim and rescuer
Step by Step
Do not touch the person while they are still in contact with the electrical source. Switch off the power at the mains or fuse box if you can do so safely. For high voltage sources such as overhead power lines, stay well clear and call emergency services; do not approach until the power company confirms it is off, as electricity can arc through the ground and air. Call emergency services for any significant electric shock. Once it is safe, check breathing and start CPR if needed, using an AED if available. Cover burns with a clean, non fluffy dressing or cling film. All significant shocks need hospital assessment, since heart rhythm problems and deep injuries may not be obvious at first.
