Crush Injury
Prolonged compression causing muscle damage and release toxins
Step by Step
Call emergency services immediately and make sure the scene is safe before approaching. Freeing someone who has been trapped under a heavy weight can cause sudden, dangerous complications, and guidance on when bystanders should release a trapped person differs between organizations, so follow the instructions of the emergency call handler and leave heavy rescue to emergency services unless there is immediate danger to life. Control any visible bleeding with direct pressure. Keep the person warm, still, and reassured, and give nothing to eat or drink. Monitor breathing and be ready to start CPR.
