Chemical Burns
Special considerations for corrosive substance injuries
Step by Step
Protect yourself first, with gloves if available, and call emergency services for significant chemical burns. Carefully remove contaminated clothing and jewelry, cutting it off rather than pulling it over the face. Brush off dry powder chemicals, then rinse the area with plenty of cool running water for at least 20 minutes, making sure the run off does not spread the chemical. For eye contact, rinse with running water for at least 20 minutes, holding the eye open. Do NOT try to neutralize the chemical with another substance. Try to identify the chemical or keep the container or safety data sheet for the emergency team. All chemical burns need medical assessment.
