Abdominal Wound
Open abdominal injury with possible organ exposure
Step by Step
Call emergency services. Do not push any protruding organs back in. Cover the wound loosely with a clean, damp dressing or cling film to stop it drying out, without pressing on exposed organs. Help the person lie down with knees bent if this is comfortable, to reduce strain on the wound. Give nothing to eat or drink. Keep them warm and reassured and watch for signs of shock. Do NOT remove any impaled object; support it in place. Monitor breathing and be ready to start CPR.
