Hypothermia
Dangerous core temperature drop below 35 Celsius requiring gentle handling
Step by Step
Call emergency services for anyone with signs of moderate or severe hypothermia: confusion, slurred speech, drowsiness, slow breathing, or no shivering despite being cold. Handle the person gently, as rough movement can trigger dangerous heart rhythms. Move them to shelter, remove wet clothing, and insulate from the ground. Cover with blankets, including the head and neck, and warm them gradually. Warm sweet drinks may be given only if they are fully alert and able to swallow. Do NOT rub limbs, use direct high heat such as hot water bottles on the skin, or give alcohol. If they are unresponsive and not breathing normally, start CPR, since people with severe hypothermia can sometimes survive prolonged resuscitation.
