Wound care and infection prevention for mammalian bites

Step by Step

Wash the wound thoroughly under running water with soap for several minutes. Control bleeding with pressure and cover with a clean dressing. Call emergency services for severe bleeding or serious injury. All human bites, deep punctures, cat bites, and bites on hands, face, feet, or genitals should be assessed by a health professional, as infection is common. Bites from dogs, wild animals, or any animal in an area where rabies occurs need prompt medical advice on rabies risk. Do not close deep wounds yourself. A health professional will also check whether tetanus protection is needed. Snake and spider bites require different, specific first aid.
